The Bowers/Great America interchange with 101 is a death trap for cyclists heading south. There’s no good way to take the lane without getting clobbered by turning cars which don’t signal. The only safe option is to wait a long time for a break, or take the sidewalk.

SF replaced many of these with bike lanes that cross the (single) exit lane, so there’s no conflict at the exit. Santa Clara should too.
