Hunters Point could be a site for Google .. but where’s the transit?
I tweeted a bit about this earlier today. While it’s a welcome development that Google would consider expansion in SF at Hunters Point, the extreme lack of public transit access makes this a pretty terrible location to add jobs in the city. It’s over two miles from the nearest T-Third stop (for which we spent over half a billion dollars, let us not forget!) and currently only served by the 19-Polk on a 15 minute headway.
Ferries to downtown and the east bay would be a small step in the right direction, but really this area requires light rail expansion to become properly integrated into the rest of the city. And shouldn’t transit expansion to the area include service that benefits Bayview/Hunters Point residents? Light rail extension would make it much easier for local residents to get to jobs in Hunters Point AND the rest of the city.
This is a case where the developer (and by extension its tenants) should fund the expansion. In all the “Vision” proposed by Lennar (http://thesfshipyard.com/vision/) light rail is nowhere to be found. It’s not too late to require it!
